Clutter/Grass setting in DCS
« on: May 14, 2017, 07:08:32 PM »
I noticed recently in some screen shots posted by MD44 and Animal that their grass seemed to look a lot better than mine, so I investigated...

In the system settings in DCS there is a slider for Clutter/Grass. It can be set from 0 to 1500. I noticed mine was set to 0. When we're flying fixed wing aircraft that's probably good enough, since we spend so little time near enough to the ground to admire the grass, and when we are on the ground we're normally on concrete. But in helicopters we spend a lot of time right at ground level, and we take off and land out in the fields.

So...I moved mine up to 1500, the max, and you can see in the before and after screenshots below, what a difference it made. And as far as I can tell it didn't have much of an impact on frame rates.

The only real downside I can see is there are a lot more places for snakes to hide. :icon_biggrin:

Funny I was wondering the same thing when I saw Animals pic of him in a staring contest with a Hawk missle........
I just thought they were running Starway's texture mod.

I think ill turn my Scott's Turf Builder slider up as well!
Thanks Fireball

Actually I was running Starways textures, but I suspect they may only make a difference at altitude.

I'm not so sure of that Animal. Take a look at the taxiways around a field with and without Starway's textures. They definitely are different.

Actually I was running Starway's mod too, in both the before and after pictures. I forgot about that.

Here's the same before and after without Starway's installed. The effect is even a little more dramatic. You even get pretty purple flowers!

Windows Aero Glass...basically a theme.  Mine runs better without for whatever reason though I haven't played with it since setup initially.

I found this ......

Window's Vista, 7 and 8 use the graphics processor for effects on the Windows Desktop, i.e. translucent title bars etc. Aero is the codename Microsoft gave these effects. They are neat but do take system resources, so you can turn them off to help the sim claim more resources itself. When you turn 'Aero off' you'll notice your desktop and taskbar change to a matte like look.
