Looking For a New Monitor
« on: December 01, 2016, 04:51:28 PM »
Anybody have any good suggestions for a new gaming monitor? What's up with the ultra wide monitors? Will that stretch or distort the image? I'm looking to spend around $300 or so. What kind of specs should I be looking for? refresh rate? Resolution? Manufacturer?

Just need to make sure the game supports the resolution you want to use, most will handle wide screens.  Read some sites like Guru3D, Toms Hardware, PCMag.com, TechRadar, http://topreviews.best

the higher the resolution the more powerful CPU processor and VGA processor you'll need.

I got a 27 inch Asus HD monitor and I'm happy with it. Maybe go larger with your budget.

I think I prefer the second one, and not for the price. I don't think I'd be happy with one that is ultra wide.

I've always wanted to check out a curved monitor for flying. Maybe one to add to look at?

I still use the old Samsung LCD TV/monitor think it is 42".  I love it.

Wide screen TVs/Monitors (HD TV), Should be 16:9 ratio which is 1920x1080 pixel resolution(or some other multiple thereof).
Wide screen 'enhanced' TV's are usually 5:3 ratios such as 1680x1050 pixel resolution.
Standard TV screens are 4:3 ratios such as multiples of 1600x1200 pixel resolution.
Ultra HD TV's (4k TV's) are also typically 16:9 ratio but have 4 times the pixel density of a HD TV at 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution, but need a graphics card capable of driving it and in some cases the application may have to support the ultra definition as well for it to be beneficial.  That is like running 4 monitors though and will be a resource hog. (wave of the future).

Otherwise look for the highest contrast ratio you can afford.
Preferably if you look at TV's make sure they are also marketed as a computer monitor as tv's tend to have signal lag times higher than monitors and regular tv's may have a lower refresh rate than what a monitor is capable of. Also tv's marketed as also being a monitor usually have nice gamer things like Gama adjustments and special refresh rate modes that are supposed to work better than average tv's for gaming etc.

I ended up getting the LG 34" Ultra Wide that Bully posted above. VERY happy with it so far (it's been hooked up for all of about an hour).

I've got to say that I am loving this new monitor. I have come to realize though that this is not the same one posted by Bulldog up above. That one is a slightly more expensive model probably due to it having the feature called "Free Sync". Mine is this model:
https://www.blinq.com/detail/electronics/desktops-monitors/monitors/lg-34-ultrawide-wfhd-led-gaming-monitor-black-34um57-p/872612?condition=factory-refurbished&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=BingPLA&creative=10425773945&device=c&matchtype=e

and I got it at Costco for $279 or so. I RECOMMEND IT!!!
