F/A-18 skins
« on: November 30, 2016, 03:38:22 PM »
Since some of us are getting back into being hotshot naval aviators, we'd probably feel even better about ourselves if we each had our own individual aircraft skins, instead of using some old hand-me-down skins borrowed from VFA-113.  :icon_biggrin:

In this post from a few years back, TwoLate showed off a VFA-151 Vigilantes skin that looks real nice to me:

Do we have that skin still around somewhere? And does anyone have the ability to make clones of it with different tail numbers (and maybe call signs)?

Actually, I just checked and we already have a VFA-151 skin in the skin pack we use for the F/A-18.  :tongue3:

It would still be nice if someone could put individual tail numbers on it.

As I understand it, the "VF-151 Line" skin allows for the bort number to be applied. Is that not the case?

This ia apparently the fix, but I'll be damned if I can make it work.

Maybe someone that is more familiar with .lua language (Fireball) can figure this out.

You're right, I'd forgotten the game can put on the tail numbers.

And I'll take a look at the lua files for fixing that glitch on the skins.

I am very confused by the numbering system the Navy is using now. In the past (Korean War era), it was a 3 digit side number that always started with the last number of the squadron number i.e. VF-51's aircraft had side numbers that started with 100 and VF-52's a/c started with 200 and so on. I looked up VF-151 and I would have expected their side numbers to begin with 100 but the skins I put the link up for have 300 as the CAG's plane. I found a picture of an F9F Panther of theirs with a side number of 1XX and a whole bunch of pictures of Phantoms with side numbers of 2XX and even a super Hornet with a side number with 4XX!! Go figure. I guess if the skins have a 3XX then that is what I will plan for when building missions. Actually, they are already set up with 3XX for the 113th skins.

Well back in my day 100, and 200 series numbers were Fighter Squadrons F-14's, usually two squads on board. 300 & 400 were Light Attack A7's, then F/A-18's, usually two squadrons on board. 500 was Medium Attack A6's......One squad............... 600 could of been EA-6, 700 could of been E2's, 800 S-3's... been almost 20 years since I was on a boat and seen all the squads on board............................... now with nothing but F/A-18's on board they are 100 thru 400.....................  or should be................   I'd have to take a look around the base and see what numbers are on the planes.....

Well, I finally got the white box to go away but the bort number for all the line skins is "307" regardless of what the plane's tail number is.  :tongue3:

Is there anyone in the squad that understands enough about the skins in DCS to fix the "VF-151 Vigilantes Line" skin so that it will display the bort number assigned in the ME?

Not sure what you are wanting.

Like Hoss said, squadrons were given dedicated numbers based on thier mission.  CAG's had Tail letters based on who they are/were assigned to.

What needs to happen is the line skin needs to be numberless (remove 307 from paint) then the Bort numbers from the game will show as assigned. But before that happens their seems to be some change in the skin lua that quit making that particular signature work on these modded skins. So once that's figured out we will have running Bort numbers to however they are assigned.... (when I get leveled out and get some time I will dive into it)..
