It has been a while since I have been in the cockpit of the A-10.. but it should go, to tune in the AM radio to the NDB then navigate with the HSI much like as you would when navigating with TACAN!! Wrongway or others may be able to expand on this some!!

I have absolutely NO time in the A-10C, but I just spent a bunch of time looking at Chuck's tutorial on the ED forum, and I cannot find a single reference to an ADF in the cockpit of the A-10C at all. There is a VHF nav radio, which you can use to tune up VOR's or ILS' but there is no ADF in the A-10C. I couldn't find any radio control heads for one nor any reference to an ADF pointer. You should be able to put a set of coordinates into the CDU and navigate to any point on the map. but that would be with your internal inertial nav gear and not using a radio to home in on.

Then that would mean that the function may not work.. Because I would have thought you could have used the VHF/FM to act as a receiver at the very least. But me not knowing is me not knowing, worth looking into though. However there are already so many navigational options in the A-10 that it may be deemed unnecessary.

Yeah, unless there is a homing function with the FM radio, the only two radios you have in the A-10 to navigate with are the VHF/ILS and the TACAN. The TACAN will point to a station, just like an ADF but also gives you distance information. The VHF/ILS will only give you course guidance relative to a particular radial off the station.

So does that mean if you tune in the UHF to a NDB you can receive and navigate to it??

I have never used it  but some on forum says it works. It mostly used for CSAR. I just radio the base I want to go inbound and they give you coordinates to base. Backup navigation is HARS 454 in manual. Heading altitude reference system. This was the navigation for the A-10a. Then IGI came along and now HARS is backup.

I don't undersfand how you could tune up an AM radio station with a UHF communication radio and be able to navigate with it. I mean, besides the obvious differences in the frequency band, what are you looking at in the cockpit to give you guidence to the station?

Tonight I can use screenshots to show how to do it and what to look for. It is on page 611 in manual if I remember correctly.. For CSAR fun having an A_10 provide Ground Support could be fun.

I found it TwoLate. I wish I knew how to take a screen shot of a page and post it here. Anyway, the course guidence comes from the roll bar on the ADI (the verticle one) and signal strength, how close you are to the station, comes from the pitch bar (the horizontal one).

Just think... 70k into a Bachelor Degree and I can cut an paste and take screen shots.. Would have been better off finishing off that Pilot's license.... or re-upping on my Captain Venture...or spending it on some fine wine, liquor and imported beer....LOL...
